I am often mesmerized by the repetitions and grids of product displays in shops. When things are the same but different. A display of cigarette packets inspired me to investigate the properties of the different brands by photographing the smoke that each one generated. They are Camel, Winston, Parliament, Marlboro, Kool, Chesterfield, Newport, Basic, and Merit.

商品ディスプレイの反復や縦横にきちんと並んだ状態に興味がそそられることがよくあります。同じものの中に違いが見い出されるような。煙草の箱のディスプレイから発想して、各ブランドの煙草から出る煙を写真に撮って、異なるブランドの本質を追求してみたのです。キャメル、マルボロ、クール、チェスターフィールド、ニューポート、ベーシック、メリットの煙です。

煙草作品が続いたけれど、ジョナサンはヘビースモーカーではないらしい。私が最初に見た作品がこの煙のシリーズと後に紹介するキャンディー・ペーパーのシリーズ。彼の多くの作品と同様に、写真とプリントの境目にある作品で、写真を元にデジタル処理を加えて出力プリントしている。残念なのは、画面の質感というのは本物を直接見ないと伝わりづらいところ。私がハッとしたのは、デジタル処理してあるイメージはツヤのある画面が多い中で、非常にマットでインクが粒子のように感じる質感が写真とは全く異なるディメンションを加え、デリケートで厚みはあるが重くないという印象。

ケンブリッジ大ロビンソン・カレッジ卒、ロンドン・カレッジ・オブ・プリンティング写真科修了。ニューヨーク州ロチェスターをベースにニューヨーク、フィラデルフィア、ロサンジェルス、セントルイスなど全米で作品を発表。2001年には[Blind Spot]の表紙を飾った。

BA Hons History of Art from Robinson College, Cambridge University, and Certificate in Professional Photographic Practice at London College of Printing. Jonathan is based in Rochester, NY, and has exhibited extensively around the country, including New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and St Louis. His work was featured on the cover of Blind Spot in 2001.

Aya lives in NY, researching emerging artists and such art programs as artist-in-residence. Currently studying for a Masters in Anthropology at Hunter College. Her interests are lie in the evolution of human cognition as well as the origin of art.
